Feathering Fridays: beauty is truth…

Outer beauty is fleeting. Inner beauty has genuine staying power.

I believe this. Really, I do. And even though I am stating this truth of the inner, I spend a great deal of time pursuing the outer.

My beauty game is manifold—I have my Grandmother’s skin, so I seek ways to honor that aspect of my physical temple. I hope I inherited her hair as well, but I won’t really know that until I stop coloring it. [I have a love/hate relationship with that idea, by the way…] My fascination with cosmetics stems from my childhood—I love to color and paint, which translates to coloring my features. I am a seamstress and have made many of my garments throughout my life. Since my days as a design student, however, I am easily seduced by the beauty of fine fabrics and well-made, comfortable, good fitting clothing. In recent years, I’ve grown accustomed to nicer footwear as well.

It also helps my cause that we are done financing the rearing of children–thus, more disposable income.

So each day as I arise, I choose to create an art project: me.

My goal is to listen to my inner muse—who is coming out to play today? What is on the menu for the next 12 hours—will there be a need to sit or hustle on my feet? [shoe choice]. Am I anticipating stress? If so, I am certain to wear a garment of peace [read, lots of turquoise]. How official do I need to appear? Is this a gypsy day? How warm or cold is the projected temperature? [amount of layers needed…]

As you can see, a great deal of thought and process of the inner beauty guides the outer product.

The poet was right: beauty is truth!

Next Friday—guess who is finally going to prom???

I am a fabric artist and a professional minister in the Catholic Church. I am married for 40+ years to a most fabulous man. We have 4 adult children, 2 daughter-in-laws ( who we also consider to our children!) and 4 grandbabies. I love to weave, paint silk, sew and design garments for myself; bead, read, write and color. I am also a spiritual Companion/Director and have a special place in my soul for women who are healing and in need of healing from trauma and abuse. I love coffee, quiet reflective prayer time at my kitchen table and long walks to breathe in the Holy Spirit. I would like to learn how to spin yarn and will someday create a spun, hand dyed/painted, beaded, woven fabulous garment of peace!
