Monday Spiritual Rumination: it could happen to you…

April is the month of sexual violence awareness. An especial focus this year is campus assault.

Too many young people have been betrayed and broken by this crime. Their families and friends are compromised as well.

And what do the campuses do to stop this epidemic?

Other than a great deal of victim shaming and protection of assets, not much I’m afraid.

But there is hope. Students are becoming more savvy and are utilizing social media to connect with each other and “out” their rapists. They are working through the law and starting to bring this situation into a greater public awareness. These actions, of course, presume that support is available to the victims.

This year’s theme of Sexual Violence awareness month, “Prevention is Possible,” bears this forth.

A really strong and public statement on the reality of sexual violence came at the Oscars, however, as Lady Gaga performed her song. Til it Happens to You. A stage full of survivors came forward as the song rose to its climax and one could not watch this without feeling moved.

Lady Gaga wrote the score for the award winning documentary, “The Hunting Ground.” This film was created by two survivors of campus sexual assault and is an incredible testimony to the power of people who desire to affect change.

In that spirit, I share this link with you. It is the video of Lady Gaga’s song as it relates to the film:

Please be safe…

I am a fabric artist and a professional minister in the Catholic Church. I am married for 40+ years to a most fabulous man. We have 4 adult children, 2 daughter-in-laws ( who we also consider to our children!) and 4 grandbabies. I love to weave, paint silk, sew and design garments for myself; bead, read, write and color. I am also a spiritual Companion/Director and have a special place in my soul for women who are healing and in need of healing from trauma and abuse. I love coffee, quiet reflective prayer time at my kitchen table and long walks to breathe in the Holy Spirit. I would like to learn how to spin yarn and will someday create a spun, hand dyed/painted, beaded, woven fabulous garment of peace!
