Feathering Fridays: the annual Christmas Outfit…

The winds of November are currently blowing in a cold front that might actually bring us snow.

This is okay since this month has been masking itself as Spring, and that just doesn’t jive with the Christmas tree lots that are open for business.

Speaking of Christmas, I have been preparing my annual holiday outfit.

In the past, I tended toward something shiny or black with lace, sequins, beads, crystals…you get the picture! My social life during the holidays is generally confined to family gatherings and casual suppers. I love that, actually, since I am not much of a night owl anymore. [Tom and I rarely make it to midnight on New Year’s Eve—we just toast it in at a convenient hour knowing it’s twelve o’clock somewhere!]

Still, I do love a special ensemble for this ritual ending of the year, and celebration of New Life. The problem with many of my past choices is that, due to us living in a colder climate, my pretty outfits need to be adorned with warm jackets or sweaters.

So, this year, I chose differently!

Original plan: create a lovely wine toned velvet midi wrap dress with a bit of shirring.

Reality moment: I don’t anticipate enough time to complete this design.

Plan B: order a lovely wool blend long sleeve cowl neck winter white sweater dress from Ann Taylor. On sale. Use my $40.00 rewards card.

Plan B won! I am quite happy with the dress although it is a bit shorter than anticipated. [my knees are not pretty!] embrace it—I purchased some dotted tights [on sale at Loft].  Bonus points—if the day is really cold, the sweater dress doubles as an extra-long tunic over leggings!

Shoes: wine toned Lauren suede heels, purchased in August, on sale at Boston Store.

Now, the coup d’état—jewelry.

Six years ago, a few months prior to our son’s wedding, I was blessed with a detached retina. Let’s just say, this was no fun.  However, full healing arrived with a side helping of a quickly growing cataract. I was able to make earrings to go with my ensemble, but did not have the eyesight or time to complete any other components.

Flash forward to now—the earrings are perfect for my Holiday ensemble!

I really wanted a long necklace with garnet, green and a darkened bronze to go with the outfit.

I have not found anything that is to my specifications, and so, I am making said necklace. Purchased the beads and chain yesterday at Knot Just Beads with a gift certificate to help pay.

I am sharing the raw beads and chain today.

More to come on the ensemble next Feathering Friday; necklace updates in my Wondrous Wednesday posts in a few weeks.

This is real life beauty for this woman. How about you?

I am a fabric artist and a professional minister in the Catholic Church. I am married for 40+ years to a most fabulous man. We have 4 adult children, 2 daughter-in-laws ( who we also consider to our children!) and 4 grandbabies. I love to weave, paint silk, sew and design garments for myself; bead, read, write and color. I am also a spiritual Companion/Director and have a special place in my soul for women who are healing and in need of healing from trauma and abuse. I love coffee, quiet reflective prayer time at my kitchen table and long walks to breathe in the Holy Spirit. I would like to learn how to spin yarn and will someday create a spun, hand dyed/painted, beaded, woven fabulous garment of peace!
